As a performance coach, the most common phrase I hear from frustrated golfers is, "I’m trying to clear my hips, but I’m still losing my posture." They’ve been told to rotate as fast as possible, so they focus on a horizontal "spin." The result? Their hips stay level, their spine straightens up, and they end up in the dreaded "Early Extension" position—standing up at impact and flipping their hands to save the shot.
 
The problem isn't a lack of effort; it’s a lack of dimensions. Most golfers view the swing on a 2D plane, but a functional, world-class move is inherently 3D. To stay inclined toward the ball while rotating at high speeds, your pelvis must do more than just turn. It needs a vertical component called Pelvis Side Bend.
 
Without this missing ingredient, your swing will always feel stuck. When you understand that the pelvis must tilt to support the turn, you stop fighting your anatomy and start creating the space your arms need to produce real speed.

To understand the scale of this movement, we look at specific benchmarks found in elite ball-strikers. It begins with a precise starting point and ends with a symmetrical "flip" of the hip heights.
  • At Address: The pelvis is relatively level, typically measured at approximately 1° toward the trail side.
  • At the Top: As you turn back, the lead hip moves down. Skilled golfers show approximately 9–10° of lead-side bend.
  • At Impact: The relationship has completely reversed. As the pelvis rotates toward the target, the trail hip moves down, reaching approximately 9–10° of trail-side bend.
This is the "20-Degree Shift." The transition is the most critical phase, where the pelvis dynamically swaps from lead-side low to trail-side low. This isn't a separate lunge or tilt; it is the natural consequence of rotating while staying tilted toward the ground.
 

The "Manufacturing" Trap: Why More Isn’t Always Better

Once golfers learn about side bend, the common error is trying to "force" the tilt. I see players excessively collapsing their lead knee or sliding their entire pelvis laterally toward the target to "create" the angle. These are artificial moves that actually kill your rotation.

Side bend must be a byproduct of rotation, not an isolated movement. If you manufacture it, you lose the athletic coordination of the swing. The goal is to turn within the tilt, allowing your anatomy to support the movement rather than fighting against it.
 

The Impact Window: The Wave Peaks After the Ball is Gone

One of the biggest misconceptions in golf is that impact is a final destination where you should try to "hold" a position. In reality, the pelvis is in constant motion. Our data shows that Maximum Trail-Side Bend—which averages about 11°—actually occurs shortly after the ball is struck.
This is vital for "continuous movement." If you try to hold your hips level at impact, you'll stall your rotation. To strike the ball purely and move into a full finish, the pelvis must continue its 3D path, peaking its tilt in the early follow-through.
 

A Simple Drill to Feel the Tilt

To move these numbers from your head to your hands, use the "Club Across the Hips" drill. This provides the visual feedback necessary to cure a flat rotation.
  1. Stand in your golf posture and hold a club horizontally across your hip bones. At address, notice the shaft is almost level (~1° trail tilt).
  2. Make a slow backswing, turning until the lead side of the shaft points lower than the trail side (9-10° Lead Side Low).
  3. Slowly rotate toward an imaginary impact. The lead side of the shaft must move up as the trail side moves down. To stay in posture, ensure the trail side of the shaft points down toward the ball line rather than out toward the horizon.
  4. Complete the follow-through, allowing the shaft to return to a level position as you stand tall.
This visual aid is more effective than any "feel" because it allows you to see the "wave" in real-time.

While the specific measurements—the 9–10° benchmarks and the 11° peak—are helpful for understanding the mechanics, your ultimate goal is movement quality.
